"There's no place like home" is the magic phrase that Dorothy, the child protagonist of "The wizard of Oz", pronounces at the end of her journey through the fantastic kingdom of Oz in order to move prodigiously to another place. In fact, in the story Dorothy, after clicking the heels of her magic red slippers three times, whispering this formula manages to go back home, in grey Kansas, in the real world. There's no place like home starts from the idea of this mysterious magic move or symbolic passage, inverting, in a certain sense, the starting point and the destination: is it possible, by clicking the heels, to create a swerve leading from real to imaginary starting from our very own emotional experience, our own sensitivity? The work starts from the idea of a simple gesture, a step which was meant to be magic but suddenly stops, it breaks, it is left unfinished, it wraps up, spiral-shaped like the famous vortex in Kansas. The small figure of the child from the grey prairie has been distilled starting from her traditional attributes or qualities: two plaits, the ruby slippers, the idea of return and the feeling of nostalgia, the dog Toto, the yellow brick road, the storm et cetera. We insisted upon the scenic qualities of minimal gestures, the entrance and exit from stage, the birth of gesture and the intensity and continuity of a presence. The character has been essentialized and reconstructed starting from the physical features of the actresses. The audience will attend an endless and mysterious wait (recalling the atmosphere of some famous performances by the artist Vanessa Beecroft) and an attempt, the ones of the eight women they find there, eight Dorothies seeking for a sudden inner drive and overwhelmed by the iteration of attempts to make that longed-for journey, the jump into fantastic or the return to another place they are homesick for, whether it's a dream or pure reality. |
