“For the show Heliogabalus, that made its début in Leuven on 2006 February 7th, I had to make lots of auditions in Belgium at Stuk Kunstencentrum searching for a face and a body for the adolescent Heliogabalus, who reigned from 14 to 18 years old. I started in February 2005 and made my definitive choice in July. The choice showed itself to be not only difficult, but also impossible. Is it possible to give an answer to Heliogabalus’ mystery? Starting from the damnatio memoriae after his very short reign, we’ve got only a few fragments and archaeological findings, nothing more, besides lots of historical trash and the legend... The video-installation Habemus papam? is the rendition of the triple imperial figure in form of video and music icon, that revealed itself for the first time during those first auditions. Then no-one of these actors-dancers was chosen: but by then the figure was indelible, triple because dynamic, indomitable, problematical. During the auditions I shot some super8 movies, and the photographer Enrico Fedrigoli started a very personal and parallel research on the imperial figure’s birth: this material, edited by Zapruder Filmmakersgroup and with a soundtrack by Mirto Baliani, who re-elaborated the ouverture of Mozart’s Don Giovanni, gave birth to the Habemus papam?”.
